With the Personal Information Protection Law having come into effect in Japan, a movement toward employing databases for unified management of the information scattered across the internal organizations of enterprises is strengthening rapidly. While databases are thus becoming more and more important, however, database security measures have not kept up. The Database Security Laboratory (DBSL) is a research institution specializing in databases, focusing in particular on this important theme.
From database forensics - a series of techniques to identify the causes of information leaks and unauthorized access and enable the identification of culprits - to protections such as security configurations, access controls, and encryption, as well as monitoring, testing, and other techniques, the DBSL carries out a diverse range of state-of-the-art research in database security. The expertise built up through this research is utilized in database-related services.
The DBSL conducts studies and research on database security measures. The results of these studies and research are reflected in our security and system integration businesses, run cooperatively with the Computer Security Laboratory (CSL).
Themes of research at the Database Security Laboratory
- Surveying the vulnerabilities and threats of databases and peripheral technologies, and establishing protective measures
- Establishing database security configurations and testing methods
- Research and development on database access monitoring methods
- Studying and researching database forensics
